Sometimes, your Windows 11 computer has problems and you need to boot from the USB recovery drive. This is how to make one.

Windows 11 provides a variety of methods for backing up, restoring, and resetting the system, but many of these tools rely on Windows being able to start. If it fails to boot, one of the best ways to avoid disaster is to prepare a USB recovery drive.

The USB recovery drive allows you to bypass the failed Windows installation and use the standalone Windows Advanced Recovery Environment to repair and restore your PC. If something goes wrong, you can use a variety of built-in tools to quickly restore your PC.

If you want to create a Windows 11 USB recovery drive to solve your PC problem, you need to do the following.

If you have previously created a Windows 10 USB recovery drive, the steps for Windows 11 are similar. For best results, insert a USB drive between 16 – 32 GB (the size you need varies from system to system) and plug it into an available port on your PC.

Note: Remember that all content on the drive will be deleted. Make sure to use a flash drive that does not have the files you need or back up the data first.

To start creating a USB recovery drive on Windows 11, press the "Start" button (or press the Windows key on your keyboard). Type the recovery drive in the search bar, and then select Run as administrator on the right.

If a user account control message appears, press Yes.

The Recovery Drive Wizard will guide you through the process of creating a drive. Make sure that the Back up system files to the recovery drive check box is selected, and then click Next.

Wait for the recovery drive tool to scan your PC for available USB drives. You will see a progress bar while scanning.

After the drive is found, select the USB drive you want to use, and then click Next.

Next, you will see a message telling you that everything on the drive will be deleted. If you have any personal files on the drive, be sure to back them up first.

When you are ready, press the "Create" button.

When Windows 11 creates a new recovery drive, you will see a progress bar.

Allow some time to complete this operation-the time required to create a new drive varies from system to system.

When the process is complete, you will see a message telling you that the recovery drive is ready. Click Finish when finished-you can now safely remove the drive.

You should store the Windows 11 USB recovery drive in a safe place. If your PC encounters a problem, you can plug it in, start your PC, and use the advanced recovery environment to repair, restore, or reinstall Windows 11.

If Windows cannot create the recovery drive for the first time, please check if your drive is working properly. You should also make sure that you select Run as administrator on the right when you start the application.

If you cannot boot to Windows 11 for any reason, you can boot into the advanced recovery environment from the USB recovery drive.

Advanced options include tools such as system restore and system image recovery to restore your PC. You can also configure startup settings, uninstall Windows 11 updates, and access the command prompt. You can also reset your PC to factory settings.

If you are resetting your computer, make sure to find your Windows 11 product key first (if it is not linked to your account). After the installation is complete, you may need to move the Windows 11 start button to the left.
