How to install Windows 11 using a USB drive

You can use the media creation tool to create a USB drive that can install Windows 11 on one or multiple PCs. That's it.

If you want to upgrade to Windows 11 or perform a clean installation, it is best to create a bootable USB installation flash drive. You can use the USB installation drive to erase and reinstall Windows. The Windows USB drive allows you to perform updates to offline PCs.

We have shown you how to use Rufus to create a bootable USB drive, but another easy way is to use Microsoft's media creation tool. The media creation tool allows you to perform an in-place upgrade, where you can keep all files and settings. It also allows you to boot from the drive and perform a clean installation.

Here's how to create a bootable Windows 11 USB drive and install Windows 11.

Note: This requires an 8 GB or larger USB drive. Make sure to back up any data needed on the drive first. Before upgrading your Windows 10 PC, make sure to close all applications and back up your system.

If you want to use the media creation tool to create a bootable USB installation drive for Windows 11, you need to perform the following steps.

First, go to the Windows 11 download page, and then press the "Download Now" button in the "Create Windows 11 Installation Media" section.

Wait for the download to complete, and then launch the MediaCreationToolW11.exe file from your download folder.

Next you need to follow some simple on-screen instructions.

First, click Accept when the EULA appears, then select your language-you can also change the language later.

To change any recommended installation settings, clear the Use this PC recommended option check box, and then click Next.

Make sure to select "USB Flash Drive" in the next stage, and then click "Next".

You need to select the USB drive that you want to use as a bootable drive. To do this, select the correct drive in the "Select USB Flash Drive" screen and press "Next".

If you don't see the correct drive, make sure it is plugged in and press "Refresh Drive List". Any drive you choose will be formatted, so make sure to back up all files first.

The Windows 11 installation file will be downloaded-wait for the download to complete. The time required will vary, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

After the download is complete, the wizard will begin to create your Windows 11 bootable USB drive.

When finished, you will receive the message "Your USB flash drive is ready". Click Finish to end the process.

You can also click on the drive letter-the contents of the drive will open in File Explorer. You should find the installation file shown in the image below.

After the USB drive is created, you can use it to install Windows 11.

Note: Before starting to install Windows 11, make sure to back up your system and close all applications.

First insert the USB drive into the open port on the PC you want to upgrade. For an in-place upgrade (allowing you to keep all files and settings), click the Setup.exe file.

You need to agree to the EULA and follow any other instructions on the screen.

Note that you can choose when to install any available updates and drivers. If you are installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, you may need to select the "Not Now" option. You can manually check for updates at any time in the future.

When you reach the "Ready to Install" screen, click "Change what you want to keep" to confirm the files and settings you want to keep (and the settings and files you want to delete).

If everything is ok, click the "Install" button.

Wait for Windows 11 to install on your Windows 10 PC. The time required will vary, so please take a break when this happens. During this process, your PC will restart several times.

You can also restart using a USB drive and perform a clean installation of Windows 11.

Make sure to enter the BIOS/UEFI settings of your PC and change the "Boot Sequence" to USB to perform this operation. Use the media creation tool to create a USB drive to make it "EUFI ready", so you should not encounter the problem of safe boot blocking the drive.

If you are not sure how to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, please check the support documentation of the PC manufacturer.

Changing the PC's boot sequence to give priority to the USB drive should allow the Windows 11 installer to appear.

When the installation wizard starts, follow any instructions on the screen-this is a simple process and shouldn't take too long to complete.

If you are worried about your computer, please prepare a USB drive with the latest Windows 11 installation files. You can then use the USB drive to install Windows 11 at any time-the same drive can run on multiple PCs. If the drive was created recently, you can also use these files to upgrade offline PCs.

If you do not plan to install Windows 11 again for the time being, you may need to create a USB recovery drive. This will allow you to restore your PC in the event of any problems. If you are not familiar with Windows 11, don't forget to learn some simple and time-saving keyboard shortcuts next.
